From the Principal's Desk
Welcome back to Term IV. The Higher School Certificate is in progress and our best wishes go to all our Years 12, 11 and 10 students who are candidates in 2005. Please inform me if further support is required.

A number of students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will be receiving ‘N’ awards for unsatisfactory performance in school and Tafe courses. It is both unfortunate and unnecessary that a small number of students place themselves in this situation. Parents should take special notice of the letters of concern.

Westfields Sports is indebted to staff who gave up their holidays to provide wonderful experiences for our students:
• Ms Swanson and Mr Jaunalksnis for taking the Geographers to Queensland
• Mr Gill and Mr Symes for taking the cricketers to Canberra
• Mr Wignell, Mr Lambkin and Mrs Kenny for taking the ‘leaguies’ to N.Z.

Last Friday evening at the Parramatta Riverside Theatre students, parents, relatives, friends and staff were ‘wowed’ by an outstanding Evening of Dance. The performances were fantastic and we may have to move to an even larger theatre next year. Congratulations to the staff and students involved.

With a number of staff on Long Service Leave we were fortunate to have talented and energetic teachers step up and take on new responsibilities. Thank you to Jim Meyer and Andrew Rogers for carrying out the duties of Deputy Principal and Ms Muraro and Mr Simpson for carrying out the duties of Head Teacher Science and History respectively.

Senior and Junior Assemblies were captivated by the presentation of Years 12 and 11 Spanish classes of performances involving flags, commentaries and dancing. Well done.

Students from our Foundation Year of 1963 are having a Reunion at the school on Sunday 23rd October 2005. The activities will start at 10.00 a.m. and conclude at 4.00 p.m. Special Guest between 12.00 p.m. and 1.00 p.m. will be former Prime Minister of Australia, Gough Whitlam, who opened Westfields in 1963. It promises to be a most enjoyable day.

There has been a very positive response to the first edition of the Alumni Journal which supports the ‘reconnection’ of past students with our present. It will be very special to have our ‘present’ being assisted by our ‘past’ to ensure an even brighter future.

The refurbishment of the Industrial Arts block will conclude this term and this will complete Stage III Phase I of our building program. Planning for Phase II (Social Sciences Building) is proceeding. As part of the school’s commitment of $250,000 to ensure that the building is completed I will be forwarding $100,000 to the Department of Education and Training. This is the only way of ensuring that the project goes ahead.

At the end of Term III the students and staff of Westfields Sports enjoyed tremendous success. In just a few weeks 15 State Titles were won. These titles included State Schools and All Schools and covered the sports of Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Athletics, Girls Hockey, Netball, Boys Football, Rugby League and Rugby Union. All Schools Titles in Basketball, Athletics, Football and Rugby Union were particularly noteworthy; defeating Barker College in the final of the Waratah Shield was the first success for public schools in over 20 years.
