Keeping His Eye On The Ball
-------- If you caught the second half of Saturday's Parramatta and Penrith Rugby League match, you may have noticed a familiar face from Westfields on the sidelines. Jake Lockwood of Year Nine is the new ball boy for the Parramatta Eels Rugby League team. Jake a five-eighth or lock for Cabramatta's U/14's First division side was selected by the Head Coach of the Parramatta Development Squad for the honour. Also Jake and other members of the development squad last week made a recruitment video focasing on the skills of the game, such as passing and tackling. This video should soon be available to coaches and schools across the Parramatta area.

New Kids On The Block
--------Time to welcome a couple of new faces you may have seen around the school. First up is Mrs Cordukes who along with Mr Brown are our schools two counsellors. Mrs Cordukes can be found in the library every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. The rest of the week she is at Smithfield West Public School. She would like to let students know that she is available to talk to if anything is worrying them. Students must make an appointment to see her during their own time and will receive an appointment slip to show their classroom teacher who will sign it to O.K. the time selected. Also new to the school is Mr Plummer, He has joined the English department from Grantham High and is enjoying teaching his new classes at Westfields. Easily the snappiest dresser amongst the male members of the English staff, he has coached and played Rugby Union extensively and is currently enjoying the challenge of the triathlon. So if you see Mr Plummer on his bike pedalling to school, ask him about the time he stared down a grizzly bear in Canada.

Debating Update
--------Many thanks to the students that have put their names down to join the three Westfields Sports High School debating teams. You have until next Friday, 2nd March to register your name in the English staffroom before applications close. Remember it is open to all students in Year 7 through to 11. Mr Lambkin, the coach of the Year 7-8 team is especially pleased with the reaction of students and is looking forward to holding a school competition so he can select the best four students to represent the school in the state wide competition.

Mr Suchy Honoured
--------Everyone at Westfields Sports High School knows how dedicated Mr Suchy is to the success of the members of the Westfields Track and Field programme, well some other people have been taking notice as well. In December 2000, Mr Suchy was awarded a Sports Australia Award to commemorate his outstanding

conribution in the area of sport. The ceremony was held in Fairfield at the end of last year but unfortunalely Mr Suchy couldn't receive his award personally because he was in Adelaide at the time for the Australian School Championships. It is that kind of commitment that is helping our athletes achieve remarkable results.

Australian School English Competition 2001

--------Westfields Sports High is offering students the chance to enter this year's Australian Schools English Competition. Every year over half a million students are invited to participate in this competition. On 30th May and again on 5th June students will have the chance to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation. All students will receive a certificate and an individual results letter with the chance to be awarded Medals and additional Certificates of Distinction. If students have received an entry form, they are remended to return the permission note and $9.00 entry fee to the front office by the 26th February.
