2009 NSWCHS - Third Title Win
SOFTBALL
On the 8th & 9th of September the Westfields Sports Boys Softball team travelled to Newcastle’s Stevensen Park to defend the NSWCHS Open
Boys Softball title for the third year in a row.
The boys were considered to be strong contenders for the title again this year, as 5 boys in the team (Kayne Kajan, Matthew Attard,
Steven Evic, Grant Clark and Mason Rossi) have represented NSW in various age divisions.
In the round of 16 the boys played were the inexperienced but enthusiastic Goulburn HS. This provided an opportunity for our young stars of
the future to play a game and taste the finals atmosphere.
Jayden Lach caught and directed the battery with precision whilst Izack Rossi of Year 7, fielded and batted extremely well.
The final score was 23-4.
In our Quarter Final the boys got off to a very shaky start against Endeavour SHS, at one stage being down 0-5.
A precision bunt by Mitchell Harris finally got the boys back on track, along with excellent pitching and a home run by Grant Clark.
Final score 13-5.
Hills SHS were looking to take revenge from their semi-final defeat in 2008. Unfortunately for them, our boys had shaken off the cobwebs
and were never threatened.
Both Kayne Kajan’s pitching and Mason Rossi’s home run soon put paid to Hills Sports aspirations and the boys won 15-2.
In the final our opponents were the up and coming Hunter Sports High, which featured a minor league baseball import from New York on an
exchange program! Even with his remarkable talent the boys were never under any pressure and got off to an excellent start.
By the end of the first innings the score was 5-0, thanks to an excellent home run by captain Matthew Attard with loaded bases.
This was soon followed by home runs to Luke Scanlan (in his last game for Westfields as he completes his HSC this year), Hayden Mathews and
Kayne Kajan whose pitching also completely shut down the Hunter batting line-up.
Final score was 13-4.
That is 3 CHS titles in a row for our Softball boys. They are already planning a defence of their title in 2010!
