A very disappointing result from a game WS could and should have won. Many lessons for the future come out of this match. WS style of play was more technically advanced and we switched play out of midfield well getting fullbacks plenty of possession. However, ESHS pressed hard and often our wingers received the ball under extreme pressure.
WS went 0-1 down to a well worked short corner with ESHS striker turning from a screening position inside the box and firing into to the opposite top corner. Within 10 minutes we replied with a free kick taken by Brendan Hallab touched in by the head of Daniel Di Ruocco.
After the half time break in order to try to get the winning goal Radovan Pavicevic was pushed up front and WS changed to a 4-4-2. It paid dividends quickly with Radovan scoring a great volley from a good cross by Sam Kagaras.
The first lesson came quickly after this that WS were not able to consolidate and ESHS responded by playing the ball forward and pressing in numbers. They won a free kick outside the box. With a good left footed strike they beat the wall and young Blake Tuxford to equalize.
The stalemate continued right through golden-goal extra time, where every 5 minutes a player has to be taken of an not replaced until finally it was 7 v 7 + GK’s. In the final minute of extra time, WS sports had kept probing and made a great chance for Sam Kagaras who was taken down in the box whilst shooting. The ensuing penalty was our chance to finish off the match. Lesson number two is to “take your chances”. Unfortunately Daniel Di Ruocco could not beat the keeper and the match ended a draw.
Next was penalty shoot-out and lesson number 3. Blake Tuxford, the much smaller goalkeeper saved the first penalty and gave the team a chance. Unfortunately our first two penalty takers could not score. Eventually it ended up 4-2 to Endeavour.
The last time WS dropped out of the BTC at this stage was with Danny Vukovic in goals and Mark Bridge up front. After the match I told the boys that we need to learn from this and that many will go onto much higher stages but the opportunities for achievement will come in similar ways. Improving the quality of everything we do and the response to pressure situations.
